How To Dispose Of Mineral Spirits

Mineral spirits, commonly used as paint thinners or solvents, can be hazardous if not disposed of correctly. Improper disposal can contaminate soil and water. Here’s a guide on safe disposal.

Materials:

Sealable metal container
Absorbent cat litter or sawdust
Safety gloves
Steps:

Reuse: If the mineral spirits are only slightly dirty, consider straining and reusing them.
For disposal, allow the used mineral spirits to sit in a sealed container until the paint particles settle to the bottom.
Carefully pour the clear mineral spirits into a new, clean container, leaving the sludge behind.
Mix the sludge with an absorbent material like cat litter or sawdust until it’s fully absorbed.
Seal the container and label it “hazardous waste.”
Do NOT pour mineral spirits down the drain or into the ground.
Check with your local waste disposal facility for drop-off or pick-up options. Some places offer specific days for hazardous waste collection.
